Instead of taking ativan tablets by mouth, is it legal to take your prescribed dosage by self injection?

I hate taking pills my mouth, and by injection it is always more affective. Could I get in trouble for this?

Chosen Answer:

No it is NOT legal.

Ativan (lorazepam) is a federally controlled schedule IV substance.

It is illegal to use a controlled substance in any way or for any reason other than as prescribed. Thus if you would take the Ativan by IV you would break the law not to mention it would be dangerous.

IV drugs are rarely used outside of hospitals or in emergency situations if oral medication is available.

I would recommend you ask your doctor about using sublingual/ODT (orally disintegrating tablet) Ativan. Instead of swallowing the pill it melts in your mouth (typically placed under the tongue).

Using ODT tablets are far more easy and safe to use.

In the U.S. you have to be prescribed needles.
So if you are found to have them without a prescription you can be prosecuted for possession of drug paraphernalia.
